As traffic passes the toll area at highway speeds, technology is hard at work, generating a toll transaction for each vehicle.
Laser detectors sense a vehicle approaching, triggering the pass reader equipment. The reader searches for a Good To Go pass radio frequency.

If the reader gets no radio frequency feedback, the system activates the license plate camera. The camera snaps a photo of the front license plate. A video camera records the whole tolling area for checks and balances. Treadles under the roadway count vehicle axles. A photo is also taken of the rear plate as a backup. The automatic system tracks four elements: time and date, Good To Go pass or license plate, and the number of axles, recording them in one transaction.

Each transaction is transmitted instantaneously to the customer service center via fiber optics. For Good To Go transactions, the system double-checks the crossing time and number of axles to determine the toll rate, and automatically deducts the toll from the customer's account.

For pay by plate transactions, the system processes the license plate pictures to determine if the number is linked to a pre-paid account. If that plate number is already on an account, the system double-checks the crossing time and axle information to determine the toll rate,
and automatically deducts the toll from the pre-paid account.
If not, after the system double-checks the crossing time and axle information to determine the toll rate, a bill is sent in a mail to the registered vehicle owner. That owner will have up to 80 days to pay the toll bill before a notice of civil penalty is issued.
