Hi, everyone! I'm Nick Shepherd. Welcome. This is about the difference between the present simple and the present progressive. "I work" or "I am working"? "She works" or "She is working"? "You work" or "You are working"? Which one?
I work(我工作)還是 I am working(我正在工作)？She works(她工作)還是 She is working(她正在工作)？You work(你工作)還是 You are working(你正在工作)？
Okay, we'll start with this: Liz speaks French. She has a French newspaper under her arm. But is she speaking French? No, she isn't. She's speaking English. Here she is again, with a different person. And now, she is speaking French. So there's the main difference: what we are doing now and what we do anytime—past, present, or future.
And here's another example, which is slightly different: This is Ryan. He's having tea with his friend, Marcus.
"What are you doing these days?"
"I'm studying engineering. And you?"
"I'm working at the E5 cafe until I get a permanent job."
And now a different one: Here's John Stevenson in an interview.
"What do you do, Mr. Stevenson?"
"I work for Marcus and Welby."
"What do you do there?"
"I work as a lawyer."
What's the difference? The first two, Ryan studying and Marcus working, are not happening now at this moment, but they are happening around now. They are temporary, short-term; they will finish soon. The second, Mr. Stevenson, is permanent, long-term; we don't know when it will end.
Now it's your turn. Here are five little situations. Are they short-term or long-term, temporary or permanent? Both forms of the verb are grammatically possible, but which is the best? You have 10 seconds to think about it. You can pause the video if you want to. Okay, here are the answers.
Number one: Siberian leopards live in China and Russia.
Two: John and Susan are staying with me until their new house is ready.
Three: "Where is Susan?" "She is flying to Hawaii at this very moment!"
Four: "What do you do?" "I work in a bank. I've been there for 10 years."
Five: I go for a walk with the dog nearly every day.
Okay. That's all. Hope you found it useful, and bye for now.
