5 Tips for Negotiating a Pay Raise

Or if you're looking for a pay raise (and let's face it, who isn't?) you'll want to know the steps to take to increase your chances of getting what you want. We've heard from CEOs, talent recruiting companies, and tonight, we're boiling down the five things you need to know before you negotiate your next pay raise.

Asking your boss for more money can be one of your most uncomfortable moments as an employee, but if you use these five tips, you'll feel more confident.

Tip number one: Choose the right time of day and week. Forget the beginning of the day. Your boss is just getting started and might be agitated that this is the first thing they'll have to deal with. Also, Friday afternoons—forget it! Like most employees will have weekends off, your boss may be looking ahead to the weekend and not even think about your proposal until the next week, and there's a possibility they'll even forget.

It needs to be a business case. This is not an emotional situation. This is not personal. This is business.

As you just heard from the president of David Wood Personnel, you'd better come prepared. Most CEOs have the same pet peeve. They say they can't stand it when an employee comes into their office, asks for a raise, and doesn't show what they've done for the company. Back up your proposal with specific information about how you've increased productivity. Talk about your accomplishments and research how much people in similar positions are making. In the end, the better prepared you are, the better offer it is for you.

Tip number three: How long should you wait before asking for a raise? One year at the earliest unless you've accomplished a gigantic task. If you think you'll need more money in the first couple of months of a new job, then make that part of the salary negotiation before you start.

Bad idea, say, "You know what? If you don't give me a raise, I'm out of here," unless you really mean it—because you might be outta there—not a good idea. This is another pet peeve of CEOs: You don't wanna back your boss into a corner. Many bosses say employees giving ultimatums, like "I have another job lined up," doesn't work.

Tip number five: If your company absolutely can't give you more cash, remember, a raise doesn't always have to be about the money. You can also negotiate more vacation time, new equipment, tuition assistance, and health care.

And if you are lucky enough to get that pay raise, experts say there is nothing wrong with rewarding yourself with a purchase or two, but after that, consider socking that money away in long-term...
